Where the Gurkhas differ from ordinary mercenaries is that they swear an oath
of allegiance to Her Majesty, something mercenaries normally wouldn't do.  Also,
they are the only regiment in the British Army (I think) which doesn't have 
regimental colours but instead they've a ceremonial truncheon, presented by 
Queen Victoria, which each Gurkha has to touch several times during the swearing
in ceremony.
