[net.auto] Street racing, Washington D.C. style

jeff@qubix.UUCP (Jeff Buchanan) (06/13/84)

The first part of this goes out to anyone who lives in the Washington
D.C. area. Does anyone know if there are still street races on Friday & Sat-
urday night on I-295 just north of the Maryland/ D.C. border in D.C.? In
1972-1973 I did a lot of street racing there and haven't kept in touch. Maybe
Guy Harris could cruise over there and check it out. The races would orig-
inate at a McDonald's on Highway one in Alexandria about 5 miles due south
of I-495. There the race would be negotiated (amount raced for and the spot.
very few races were run "heads up") the money would be given to a third party
and then the caravan would drive up to Howard Johnson's where the two cars
would uncap and put on slicks. For a big race, 100 spectators would
not be an unusually large crowd. Next, the two race cars would thunder
(remember we're uncapped) across the Woodrow Wilson bridge then into D.C. about
a half mile. Someone would block traffic and mark off the spot and start the
race. A quarter mile later the winner was decided, then up to second street
to pay the money, cap up and put on street tires.
I'd sure like to hear from anyone with similar experiences. I under-
stand New York, Detroit, and Southern California had quite a street race
culture. I now live in Northern California and would especially like to
know if anyone has information about street racing around here (Santa Clara
Valley). I'm sure in the early seventies there was a lot of it. Where
exactly was it done then?

I'm sorry to hear you are into a dangerous thing like street racing.
It's these activities that give racing a bad name and make it more
difficult for thoose of us who like to race legally.

I will not start into all the reasons why this sort of thing should
not be done since they are all self evident and previously disgussed.
