FOREIGN MILITARY SALES
Congress has receed a proposed Letter of Offer from the NATO
SEASPARROW Consortium for Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands,
Greece, Norway and Australia for the purchase of 950 SPARROW missiles (includes
RIM-7M and RIM-7P misle configurations), 450 RIM-7P missile modification
kits, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is
$278 million.
This case will contribute to the foreign policy and national serity
objectives of the United States by improving the military capabilities of
Australia; furthering rationalization, standardization, and interoperability;
and enhancing the defense of Europe and the Pacific region. The purchasi
countries need these missiles for new ships entering service and for the
replenishment and up-grade of existing inventory and will have no difficulty
absorbing them into their armed forces. The sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the regions.
The prime contractor will be the Raytheon Company, Missile Systems
Division, Lowell, Massachusetts. Implementation of this sale will n require
the assignment of any additional U.S. Government personnel or contractor
representatives to the purchasing countries.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result
of this sale.
Te Department of the Navy will be responsible for all transactions
related to this sale.
The Government of Australia has requested the development, modification,
system integration and flight testing of two aircraft, groundtation equip-
ment, personnel training and training equipment, spare and repair parts, U.S.
Government and contractor engineering and technical services, support equipment
and other related elements of logistics support. The estited cost is $90
million.
This sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security
objectives of the United States by improving the military capabilities of
Australia, furthering standardization, and iteroperability; and enhancing the
defense of the Pacific region. Australia will have no difficulty absorbing
this equipment into its armed forces. The purpose of the program is to upgrade
the aircraft electronic equipment. The se of this equipment and support will
not affect the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractor will be E-Systems Inc., Greenville, Texas.
Implementation of this sale will not require the assignment of U. Government
personnel or contractor representatives to Australia.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result
of this sale.
The Department of the Air Force will be responsible fo all transac-
tions related to this sale.
