I agree that it is a stupid }idea. We don't need an M-1 tearing up the street (which I must help pay }for) in order to have a good parade. We can have the lighter hardware just }the same, it won't damage the roads. This will, perhaps, not be very helpful to the arguments being offered, but I seem to recall having seen treads for some treaded vehicles with rubber where the tread meets the surface. I'm not certain these type of treads are available for the M-1, and it certainly wouldn't help vis-a-vis weight restrictions, but it would keep the treads from flinging bits of asphalt into the crowd. I also tend to wonder what the actual figures are on how many pounds per square inch the M-1 would put on the pavement, since the weight is fairly evenly distributed over the area where the treads meet the road, unlike a bus where the weight of the bus is distributed over relatively small area where the tires meet the road. Now that I think of it, I beleive this would best be crossposted to sci.military for a good answer. Lance -- Lance T.
