From: lmlee@PacBell.COM (Lloyd Lee) Last week I posted an article in soc.veterans explaining how to obtain your military records (personnel file/medical records). I am posting this article to sci.military in order to reach a larger group (one time only-please no flames) who may like to start reading soc.veterans. I am doing the multiple posting because of the respone I received from two readers who stated that their fathers were either KIA or MIA in Vietnam and wanted to know if they could obtain their father's military records? I did not believe when I posted the article that I would receive such a heart-felt response since I was aiming the article to Vietnam Era Veterans. In fact, dependents of deceased veterans can obtain the military records by completing SF180 item 6. This form is obtainable from any Veterans Regional office or Vietnam Veterans of America Center. I made a phone call and received the form within 2 days. Once completed the form should be mailed to the appropriate address as indicated on page 2. This 2 page form is simple to fill out but the requester should indicate in Section 11, part 4 that "I request the personnel and/or medical records under provisions of the Freedom of Information Act, fee waiver requested". Also state that you want a paper copy of the records. Lloyd Lee Marin County Chapter 547 Vietnam Veterans of America
