[net.auto] Non-Factory A/C Query

bufford@ihuxw.UUCP (S. C. Smith) (06/21/84)

We are having second thoughts on having skimped on the purchase
of our Nissan Stanza by not getting factory air. Does anyone
have any opinions, warnings, advice, etc., regarding having
A/C installed after the fact? Looks like the going price is about
$800 at the dealer.

Thanks.

I bought a slightly used Mazda RX-7 without A/C. The dealer
installed the "factory" A/C for the same price that would
have been charged had I bought the car ne with A/C.
Some years prior I owned a Dart with aftermarket A/C. It
was not integrated into the ventilation system and looked
ugly. It also froze up and dripped on my feet. It was
one of the well known aftermarket makes.

I was under the impression that most lower cost Japanese cars
were delivered without air conditioning. When I bought my
Sentra, the car did not have AC, but the dealer installed it
and it worked just fine. I see no reason why the installation
of a similar unit on a similar car should present any special
problems, even if the car is used.
