[ont.archives] anon ftp from utradio

darwin@ai.toronto.edu (Ian Darwin) (12/20/88)

Kudos to Henry for having been the one to take the initiative to
start a way of passing around information on who has what.
This has long been overdue.

Here is some stuff that I've uploaded to utradio for anonymous ftp.
Utradio is a.k.a. radio.astro.toronto.edu.

This is in the "upload" directory but may eventually get moved over
to some other sub-directories, so learn to use "ls -l" under ftp.
There is other stuff in other subdirectories there too.

-rw-rw-rw- 1 ftp 53613 Dec 14 13:39 cron2-beta.tar.Z (later edition)

None of the stuff I have uploaded is AT&T licensed; most of it is copyright
freeware with minor limitations on use (mostly credit where credit's due;
the GNU stuff is more restrictive in that you have to send the source
along with any copies you make; see COPYING there for exact clauses.)

As with the posting of neat.ai, this stuff is presently only
available from ONET and/or the UofT campus net. Some parts
are available on a few machines locally for uucp; let me
know if you need some of this list by uucp.

Hope somebody finds this useful.

In case people are wondering why a Ian has been putting stuff on a low profile
machine like radio (radio astronomy, not the campus radio station) I thought
I'd explain what happened.

A year or so ago some people around here were talking about the problem of
people independently getting copies of the same software (TeX, gnuemacs,
little utilities etc). In a fit of enthusiasm I volunteered to be a UofT
sources coordinator. Fortunately, I was talked out of it :-)

I had started to set up an anon ftp directory. It still exists, and I'm happy
to have people put stuff there (if it's big let me know first, let me know
later in any event). If I have to roll stuff off onto tape I'll leave a list
of the stuff on disk, although I make no guarantees about how quickly it will
come back if someone wants it.

Currently the anon ftp directories contain a idiosyncratic collection of
things I've snarfed or saved over the past year or two. Plus some useful bits
other people have uploaded. There's no point looking for big things like X or
TeX, we don't have the disk to keep them on line, and others regularly get
these things anyway.

And I will clean up the directories someday...
