Different companies and parts of companies have different standards of what is expected regarding working hours. This can range from nine to five with long lunches to twelve hour days including weekends. One company claimed one of its benefits was free pizza for Sunday dinner. Another company had staff meetings at 8:30 am Saturday. The trick is to learn what the actual requirement is (usually not discussed during interviews) and if it is acceptable to you. Different companies have different attitudes toward their employees. This ranges from the employees being very important to the company to the attitude that employees are a money sink (like talking about a company's monthly `burn rate'). Loyality is related to how much a person likes the company; the best measure of that is: Does the employee actively recruit his/her friends to join the company. Or actively discourage friends from applying there. Randall Neff@anna.stanford.edu
