This session will focus on the current architecture of the Mobile
Communications Systems and relate them to the present customer
needs. This session will also address the evolution of the Mobile
Communications Systems that will address future needs of the Mobile
Phone customers through year 2000. The research and development
efforts in this area will be presented. The Mobile Communications
Systems will include: Base Station Systems that use high power
centralized transmission, Cellular Systems that use low power
distributed transmission, Cellular Switching Networks, Portable
Units Technology and its effect on the switching network,
Distributed Switching in the Cellular Systems. Inter Cellular
Systems Communications. Terminal Equipment Design and Technology
evolution, Portable Units Technology and challenges of their use,
The effect of the different information technologies such as,
voice, data, video on the mobile communications systems will be
addressed.
This session will cover the following topics:

Centralized and distributed networks.
+o Present Customer Needs of the mobile communications systems.
+o User Programmability in the Cellular Systems.
+o Different Technologies used in the Mobile Telecommunications
Network.
+o Evolving Mobile Network Architectures and their impact on the
user community.
+o Cellular Network performance and reliability.
+o Fault Tolerance in the Cellular network - what?, why?, how?
etc.
