All through the discussion of the autobahns has been the assumption
that the German drivers are very disciplined. Hog wash!!! Of course
they (those who drive at very high speed) don't turn around and talk
to their passengers, etc. How could they driving 160 kph without
immediately having a fatal accident? Their (and, once again I'm
talking about the speed demons, not all German drivers) real lack
of discipline shows through whenever an unusual situation presents
itself. For example, I've driven in Germany when it rained so
hard that visibility was almost nil. In those circumstances, quite
a number of drivers continued to roar by at very high speed. Also
check out a construction zone where traffic is reduced to 2 lanes
(one coming, one going) seperated only by small round disks on the
pavement. In such situations, I have several times had drivers sitting
behind me flashing their headlight because I was going *only* 120kph!

I do agree, however, that the autobahns are in much better shape
than most of our interstate system.
