[comp.org.ieee] EIT/PE in NY State, question regarding EIT exam prereq's

rick@sbcs.sunysb.edu (Rick Spanbauer) (08/14/89)

I am kicking around the idea of taking the EIT exam here in
NY State. My office mate has indicated an interest in
studying along with me and taking the exam. The question is
whether NY State will allow someone with a non ECPD accredited
degree (he has a BS/MS in CS) to take the EIT. I have one older
study guide (1984) that indicates individuals with degress in
"closely related fields" are allowed to do the EIT, provided
they have some experience of an engineering nature, but that
this particular avenue was gradually being phased out. Does
anyone happen to know the law for EIT/PE in NY? Yes, I already
have the name of the person to call in Albany :-)

Well, I finally remembered to bring in my info sheet from the EIT I took
in NY in Fall 88. The requirements for EIT are:

Education (one of the following):

1. Have graduated or be within 20 semester credits of graduation from an
acceptable engineering baccalaureate program (accredited by ECPD)

OR

2. Possess the combination of an unacceptable baccalaureate engineering
degree or an approved baccalaureate degree in engineering technology,
mathematics, or a basic science, _and_ a Master's degree in engineering
from a department which offers at least one approved undergraduate
   engineering program.
