The procedure Joe Boykin explained works, but of course things like
"reply" and "fing" will not work.  This is a pretty painful procedure,
admittedly.  Also be aware that mail is not always delivered reliably
over the interface between the two systems.  (If it's important,
use the phone.)

Be cheered by the knowledge that we are working on the problem and are
evaluating bids for a new compmail service which should include
internet access.
