<This is for the gas guzzler> It is surprising that AMOCO is mixing methanol in their gasoline. Surprising because just a couple of months ago, AMOCO was placing ads in the Philadelphia area warning people about oil companies that added "cheap" methanol to their gasoline. The ads stated that the "fuel cheapening" methanol could damage the fuel system, decrease drivability and possibly void your new car warranty. The ad also stated that AMOCO would never add methanol to their gasoline because "you could always count on AMOCO." The AMOCO ads were in response to the actions of ARCO in the Philadelphia area. Late last year ARCO started mixing about 5% methanol into their regular no-lead gasoline. ARCO claims that the methanol is benificial because it helps your engine run cooler and more efficiently, helps conserve scarce oil reserves and increases octane ratings without adding to cost. ARCO regular no-lead has an octane rating of 88 vs. most other regulars of 87. I have been using ARCO no-lead with methanol in my 1982 Plymouth TC-3 for about 5000 miles and have had no problems with drivability. Wayne Toy Penn State University W4T@PSUVM
