[comp.org.ieee] IEEE.ORG Directory Service

                        IEEE.ORG Services
                        =================

                   Directory Service (aliases):

The IEEE maintains a "Directory Service" in which active IEEE volunteers
can register their Internet address. They are assigned an "E-Mail name"
(alias), usually "i.name", where "i" is the first initial, and "name"
is the last name. To resolve ambiguities, we may have to assign
two initials or use some other means of making names unique.

Messages addressed to "i.name@ieee.org" will automatically be forwarded
to the actual Internet address. The "E-Mail name" will also be
installed as a forwarding address on the "COMPMAIL" system on which
those IEEE volunteers have accounts who otherwise do not have access to
any E-Mail service reachable from Internet. Thus, a message on COMPMAIL
addressed to "i.name" will be forwarded to the appropriate Internet address.
Similarly, all COMPMAIL users can be reached from Internet by using
their "i.name@ieee.org".

You can obtain a list of all valid "aliases" in the IEEE.ORG
Directory Service simply by sending a one-liner message to
"directory@ieee.org" and the system daemons will send back a list
via E-mail of all usernames for which mail will be forwarded.

If you would like to be listed in the IEEE Directory, as a first step,
simply send a message to "aliases@ieee.org" with the following information:

      o Your Full Name
      o Your Membership Number
      o Daytime Voice Telephone number
o Your e-mail address in Internet format

The system mail daemon will parse the address your message came from
and will send you back a test message. If that message bounces, then
one of the System Administrators will attempt the address specified
in your message. This will establish a valid Internet address reachable
from "IEEE.ORG".

The system daemaon will return a form which you need to print out
and mail to us for security reasons, before we can establish your
alias in the Directory Service. At that time, we will inform you
of the "E-Mail name" assigned to you.

                        Special addresses:

o Mail requesting Information: <nisc@ieee.org>
o Mail regarding IEEE network operations: <noc@ieee.org>
o Mail inquiring how to become a member of IEEE (for NON-Members only)
  should be sent to <membership-info@ieee.org>
o Mail inquiring about the status of a pending membership application
  should be sent to <application-status@ieee.org>
o Mail regarding lost publications or inquiring about the status of which
publications you are registered for: <membership-services@ieee.org>
o Student Branch Coordinator: <student-services@ieee.org>
o For information on linking to Mailing-lists: <newsinfo@ieee.org>

                    Newsgroups and Mailing-lists:

we now have our own 'ieee.*' newsgroup hierarchy in place, ready to be
linked via NNTP (sorry, we cannot handle UUCP connects) to interested sites.
For those who do NOT have access to a news-server, these are also linked
to mailing-lists so that they can be received via "mail".
You must have a registered IEEE.ORG alias to be able to on the mailing-lists.
If interested, send mail to 'newsinfo@ieee.org'.
