[net.auto] Hogging the left lane

Re: The following viewpoint (Other messages agreeing with it have
appeared. I just chose this one because it was the first I could find.):

"Nobody has any right whatsoever to drive above the legal limit, unless
s/he has a little red light on top and a siren. If you are intent on
exceeding the limit, DO IT AT YOUR INCONVENIENCE, NOT MINE! If you are
unwilling to change lanes to accommodate your unsafe, illegal impatience,
WHY THE %&*!! DO YOU EXPECT ME TO???"

It seems to me this viewpoint could be paraphrased as: "You're being a
jerk, so I'll be one too."

The author of the previous quotation also says (in the same message):

"I may [change lanes], purely in the interest of safety (as I would
avoid any other careless, hazardous driving menace), but I find that
  attitude infuriating."

If you do something in the interest of safety, it should not be a
sometimes thing. If the people in the middle (or right) lane are
aware of what is going on, you need only signal and someone will
make room for you. Chances are, the speeding party will probably
try the same trick with less regard for a safe maneuver. This may,
in turn lead to an accident for no reason.

Finally, if there is no one in the slower lanes, why are you in
the fast lane in the first place?

I don't mean for this message to be taken as support for those
people who flash their lights and try to go faster than prevailing
traffic by weaving through it. I only mean it as a common sense
argument in how to deal with these people.

Another name for the left (fast) lane is the "PASSING" lane!!!

If someone wants to get by GET THE HELL OUT!

I just love the 'Me Macho' attitude of some of the people on this
net. They don't seem to be able to read very well. Here is a guy
screaming at people to get out of the left lane so he can use it.
Everyone who has put two cents in about the use of the left lane
by the Machismo types has said that they are using the left lane for
passing. Why is it the Machos think that only they should be
allowed to use the left lane? Other people have to pass also. I
have not seen one reasonable person even faintly suggest that the
left lane is for driving along to enjoy the scenery. They have all
pointed out that they are in the act of passing. What bugs them,
and me, is when Marvin Macho, cruising in the left lane at 80,
comes up from behind and performs the T-Bird Tango to get them to
Immediately rush to the right. Never mind that the next lane to
the right is chock full of slower cars, they want you to get over
NOW so they can continue to get their jollies off. It seems that
when some people get behind the wheel of a car, they suddenly think
of themselves as another Mario Andretti. I even had some nut
start blinking and blowing last week while I was in the center lane.
The left lane was empty, the right lane was moving at about 60. My
lane was moving at 70, and here was this escapee from the funny
farm wanting me to slow down and merge with the right lane while
all along the left lane was open. You folks are right, the left
lane is for passing. Then why don't you Macho Misfits use it that
way instead of for practicing for the Grande Prix and hogging the
left lane at 80?
