IEEE Press Announcement ISO/IEC POSIX.1-1990 from the IEEE On September 28, 1990, the IEEE Standards Board formally approved IEEE Std 1003.1-1990: IEEE Standard for Information Technology Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) Part 1: System Application Program Interface (API) [C Language]. Because IEEE Std 1003.1 is identical to the 1990 version of ISO/IEC 9945-1, the IEEE standard will be published and distributed as the international standard ISO/IEC 9945-1 : 1990 (IEEE Std 1003.1-1990). This standard is a revision of IEEE Std 1003.1-1988. Abbreviated as POSIX.1, the standard defines a standard operating system interface and environment for supporting application portability at the source-code level in a UNIXr-based environment. POSIX.1 describes external characteristics, functions, and facilities of importance to application developers, emphasizing those services required to effectively process an array of commercial applications. The standard contains terminology, concepts, and specifications governing structures, headers, environment conditions, and related requirements. It defines system service interfaces and subroutines, language-specific services for C, and addresses portability, error handling, and error recovery issues. Future IEEE publications within the POSIX family of standards are currently under consideration, including: Shell and Utility Facilities; C, Ada, and FORTRAN Bindings; Networking Protocols; Real-time Extensions; and Verification Testing. The POSIX standard will NOT be available in electronic format. It is available now, in published form only, at a list price of $75.00 plus shipping and handling.
