    Abstract:
Virtually all software systems must manage information of some
form. This is usually accomplished by separating the problem of
managing information residing on mass storage from the problem of
managing information residing in main memory.

The first part of this talk will discuss the performance issues
of object-oriented database systems as they relate to the need to
solve these information management problems in a unified fashion.

The second part of the talk will cover the design and implement-
ation of a high performance, object-oriented, database management
system currently under development at the Multimedia Laboratory
of the University of Waterloo. This system, called the "Real-time
Database Manager (RDM)," attempts to solve some of the problems
examined in the first part of the presentation. The discussion
will focus on the recently completed, second version of RDM and
will include a simple example of its use.

    The Speaker:
Grant Weddell received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer
Science from the University of British Columbia in 1976 and 1980,
and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of
Toronto in 1987. He was a Member of Scientific Staff with Bell-
Northern Research from 1980 until 1982, and is currently an
Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the
University of Waterloo. His primary research interests include the
compilation and performance of object-oriented database management
       systems.
