A while ago I mailed a message to the ieee society membership address, as listed in a recient posting. I can only suppose that no one at the IEEE reads that address, for although the mail did not bounce I have not heard anything from them. Perhaps someone on the network can send me details of the cost involved in joining the society. I would like to join as a student member. I would also like to join the IEEE Computer Society. I have three different application forms, but the only one which mentions student rates is thee years out of date. Why does the periodical Computer (from the IEEE Computer Society) contain an application form which does not consider student applications? Surely this is a mistake. I would be grateful for any information. I am resident in the UK (strathclyde university). Gordon Russell

I have a copy of the "IEEE Membership Information" booklet for 1991, which does not give the student rates, but you could try writing to the following address: IEEE Service Center 445 Hoes Lane, P.O. Box 1331 Piscataway, New Jersey 08855-1331 Ask for a "Student Membership Application". For regular members (non-student), the rates are: Membership (for European residents) $74.00 Computer Society Membership $22.00 All memberships run to December 31st each year, so they charge the full amount if you join between September 1 and February 28. They charge half price for the remainder of the year if you join between March 1 and August 31. Writing to the above address should work; my booklet has a an order form in it which allows checking a box for the type of information needed and says to mail it to that address. "Student Membership Application" is one of the boxes listed.
