[net.auto] Need advice stripping car paint

lambert@csin.UUCP (Mark Lambert) (06/28/84)

I am stripping my MGB to bare metal prior to repainting it, and
am considering using either paint stripper or a sandblaster. Can anyone
comment on the relative ease of use of both these methods? I am
particularly interested in the time needed to sandblast vs. time needed
to use stripper, the relative amount and type of preparation necessary,
and any dangers involved with using a sandblaster.

				Thanks in advance,

I have used several methods of removing paint and I think
the sandblasting is probably the easiest. The chemical
strippers involve a lot of work to get the ooze off even
though they tell you to just wash it away. The stripper
also attacks different paints differently and some take
quite a while to remove. The surface has to be sanded anyway
after you strip since the stripping gook doesn't get off
ALL the old stuff. Stripping is great if you take the
car to Redistrip but they wanted $800 to do my Sunbeam!!!!
Also if the car has any bondo or fiberglass the stripper
will soak into it making future painting a bear as the
methylene chloride slowing pops off your new paint job.

I vote for sandblasting or even sanding disks!
