Golf (out side of the U. S.) and polo are considered classy sports played by wealthy people. VW might have wanted to somehow associate these cars with the sports and the people who play them. The primary purpose for the names for the first four "new-generation" VWs (for which read "cheaper Audis") was, from what I've heard, to name them after the four winds: Passat (Dasher) - "passatwinde" means "trade winds", thus the west wind Scirocco - an east wind Golf - "golf" meaning "gulf" in German, refers to a south wind from the gulf Polo - (this one is a bit dodgy) refers to the north wind from the poles I guess "Jetta" refers to the jet stream, and "Santana" (Quantum sedan - "Passat" and "Santana" are like "Golf" and "Jetta") refers to the guitarist :-). Anybody have better info on this? Guy Harris {seismo,ihnp4,allegra}!rlgvax!guy
