[net.auto] NY Seat Belt Law

leslie@pixadv.UUCP (leslie) (07/03/84)

It is now a law in NY to wear seat belts in the front seat.
I know Canada has such a law.
Do any other states have this good idea of a law implemented?

No other state has a seat belt law, as yet, however, in the rules
requiring air bags in all cars by 1988 or so, the government has
said that it will drop the requirement if 2/3 of the states adopt
seat belt laws by 1989. Since auto makers have not been too
excited about air bags, I think we will see a lot of money going
into lobbying efforts to get seat belt laws passed at the state
level.

In an aside, Gov Cuomo signed the seat belt law this morning, real
fast. It seems he was involved in an accident yesterday, but,
because he was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. Talk about
coincidence?

For all those who think the Gummint shouldn't get involved, I
don't suppose you remember when they passed the law requiring
seat belts to be put in all cars? This was another fight that
went on for some time.

Does all this talk of seatbelt laws remind anyone else of the old
'Helmet Laws' for motorcyclists of a decade ago? Seems to me those
laws were thrown out in court. Does my memory serve me correctly
and if so could someone try to explain the philisophical difference
between the seatbelt laws of today vs. the helmet laws of yesterday.

Thanks,
Dave K.

By the way, I use my seatbelt all the time and have for the last
4 years. I support the law as I supported the helmet law on the grounds
of who pays to take care of the people turned veggies by accidents.

Don't bike without a helmet in Jersey, they get awfull upset.
The same goes for most other states. Helmut laws are very much
alive and well.

Oh if only people would read into things completely!! January 1,1985
is when NY's law starts.

No, not quite right either. The new seat belt law in N Y
goes into effect around the 1st of December 1984. The police
will be handing out warnings for about a month though, just to
get everyone into the habit. They plan to hit folks with fines
after the New Year. They DO have the option of handing out
real tickets before then though.
