Interactive Software Engineering announces with great sadness the passing away of Thomas P. McCarthy, Vice President of Marketing, in an airplane crash on May 17, 1990. Tom had joined Interactive almost exactly a year earlier. In this short period his contribution to the company and to the development of Eiffel has been immense. Some of the areas where his legacy will be felt most significantly include the Eiffel Institute of Technology, the formation of the Eiffel Consortium, the Eiffel Shelf, the construction of a network of international distributors and resellers, the successful search for second sources (in particular with the ongoing development of DOS, OS/2 and Macintosh versions), the improvement of Interactive's customer support program, and the considerable improvement of Eiffel awareness, image and sales over the last year. Many readers of this newsgroup have been in contact with Tom directly or indirectly. Even those who did not know him very well could not but be impressed by his enthusiasm, his openness, his integrity and his intelligence. Tom had the long-term view. From the moment he was hired he understood that Eiffel was here to change the software world. He also knew that it would take some time, but he had unlimited confidence in the magnitude of the final result. To his colleagues and friends, Tom was the very embodiment of the word ``positive'', always eager to recognize the best in people and in events. Tom was 32; he is survived by his wife, Susan, and three daughters. We will miss him sorely. -- -- Bertrand Meyer bertrand@eiffel.com
