The August Motor Trend contains a detailed comparison of the 20 year old Shelby G.T.350 and the new SVO. The conclusion was that "... top-performing street cars now rival the abilities of race cars of just 20 years ago." Sure there was a horsepower gap, but the overall performance was fairly close. I think this is true in general for most makes of cars. The new Corvette, Mustang SVO and GT, Camaro Z28, etc. have made great strides toward matching the performance of the old racers and still managing to get decent fuel economy and a good ride.
