[net.auto] DeLorean

wookie (11/16/82)

The British receivers for the DeLorean Motor Cars Ltd announced they were
permanently closing the Belfast assembly plant. The receivers have been
approached by several prospective buyers of the plant with proposals to
keep the facility open and continue production of the sports car on a limited
basis. It looks like you might still be able to go buy one of these things
if you are so inclined.
My understanding is the handling is terrible and the car is underpowered
(although they were about to bring out the turbocharged version soon). Another
problem is how to get dirt off the Stainless Steel without it leaving ring
around the door panel (Oh those dirty rings!)

ANybody have any experience or know any true stories about DeLoreans?
Besides being underpowered, what were the problem areas that a
prospective purchaser should know about?.....

Jeff,
The only Delorean problem I have seen is that the nose of the car has a
tendency to pull toward the little white lines in the road. :-)

I had a chance to drive a Delorean once. My main impressions were:
acceptable power and handling. Awesome cockpit layout. Getting in
and out takes a moment to get used to if you're used to a land yacht.
My main complaint was visibility. Seeing out of the car other than
straight ahead is not easy, especially for checking blind spots. If
I'm going to shell out that much for a car, I want to see what's
trying to hit me! Also, there is limited awareness of where the nose
of the car is, as the front tapers down.

Don't let this scare you off, though. It's a fun car to drive and (for
some people, I guess) an ego trip to be seen with. Check with your
insurance company before buying... some companies won't touch it.

Yeah, that and the horn goes "toot" instead of "beep" :-)

p.s. I've seen a poster of a DeLorean with the plate "DEALER" and a sticker
saying "things go better with Coke"
