                            O O P S L A ' 8 9
                 Conference on Object-Oriented Programming
                   Systems, Languages, and Applications
                             2-6 October 1989
                   Hyatt-Regency, New Orleans, Louisiana

DESCRIPTION

OOPSLA'89 is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery's Special
Interest Group on Programming Languages (ACM/SIGPLAN).

The annual OOPSLA conference is the leading forum for the presentation of
research in and the application of object-oriented programming. OOPSLA'89
encourages participation from the wide variety of systems, languages, and
applications concerned in some way with the object-oriented paradigm.
Potential contributors are encouraged to submit:
o Original technical or survey papers
     o Proposals for tutorials
     o Proposals for panels
     o Proposals for workshops
     o Proposals for live demonstrations

TOPICS

OOSPSLA'89 topics include:
     o Applications
     o Design
     o Databases
     o User Interfaces
     o Tools and Environments
     o Software Engineering
     o Education
     o Languages
     o Implementation
     o Theory

PAPERS

Technical papers and survey papers are invited in the topics listed and in
closely related areas. Technical papers should describe recent work
relating to a significant problem. Survey papers should provide fresh
approaches to the organization and integration of knowledge.

Papers will be evaluated in two categories: short and long. Short papers
may have content which is specific to a single language or system, while
long papers are expected to make a contribution to object-oriented
programming in general.

Papers will be selected on the basis of originality, the significance of
their contribution to the state of the art, and quality of written
presentation style.

Papers must be written in English and short papers may not exceed 15
standard typewritten double-spaced pages (approximately 3000 words). Long
papers may not exceed 25 standard typewritten double-spaced pages
(approximately 4500 words). A separate cover sheet should include the
title, authors' names, affiliations, addresses (postal and electronic),
telephone numbers, 100-word abstract, number of words in the paper, and a
list of keywords. Authors must also indicate the topic area of the paper,
choosing from among those listed, and the type (short or long). All
accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, and
authors will be required to sign an ACM copyright release form. Five copies
of submitted papers with cover sheets must be received by 17 March 1989.
Authors will be notified of acceptance by 15 May 1989 and the final
camera-ready versions of accepted papers will be due on 30 June 1989. Late
papers, papers that exceed 25 pages, and papers that omit the requested
cover sheet information will not be reviewed. Send submissions to:

     Apple Computer, Inc.

PANELS

Proposals are invited for expert panels focusing on contemporary problems
and issues involving object-oriented systems and languages. The goal of
panels is to raise and discuss issues relevant to the field.

Panels will be selected based on the significance of the issues they
address and the potential for lively exchange among panel members and
between the panel and the audience. Panelists' position papers should be
brief, 1 to 2 pages, and should be designed to depict the complementary and
contending views within the panel.

Panel proposals should include a list of the key issues to be discussed,
the panelists' positions on the issues, and the panel format. Panel
proposals should also indicate the desired amount of time for the panel,
since the OOPSLA'89 program will attempt to accomodate panels of different
lengths. A separate cover sheet should include the panel title, the name,
affiliation, address (postal and electronic), and phone number of the panel
moderator and the names and affiliations of the panelists. Five copies of
panel proposals must be received by 14 April 1989. Proposers will be
notified of acceptance by 15 May 1989 and the final camera-ready versions
of position papers for publication in the conference proceedings will be
due on 30 June 1989. Send submissions to:

TUTORIALS

Proposals are invited for tutorials covering subjects relevant to
object-oriented programming. Tutorials have become an important feature of
the conference. They offer a leading edge forum for educating
professionals, and give attendees the opportunity to take an in-depth look
at topics of their choice in intensive half, full or two day tutorials.
There are beginning level tutorials for those new to the field, and
intermediate and advanced tutorials aimed at a more experienced audience.

All tutorial proposals will be reviewed. Tutorials will be selected on the
basis of the importance of the topic, the expertise of presenters, and
their previous experience in conducting successful courses of this kind.
Product marketing or selling would be inappropriate in this forum.

A proposal must describe the objectives of the tutorial, the level
(beginner, intermediate, or advanced), any background required of the
intended audience, the material to be presented, the background of the
speakers, and an outline of the topics with time allotments. Lecture notes
from similar courses or representative samples of course materials would be
helpful. A cover sheet should be included, giving the tutorial title, the
name, affiliation, address (postal and electronic) and phone number of the
tutorial organizer, and the names and affiliations of other speakers. Five
copies of the tutorial proposal must be received by 17 March 1989.
Proposers will be notified of acceptance by 14 April 1989 and the final
camera-ready versions of tutorial materials for publication in tutorial
notebooks will be due on 30 June 1989. Send submissions to:

DEMONSTRATIONS

Proposals are invited for live demonstrations of systems that use, apply,
or teach object-oriented programming.

Demonstrations will be selected on the basis of technical merit, relevance
to object-oriented programming, novel and interesting features, and
feasibility. The presence of the system's designer and/or implementor at
the demonstration is extremely desirable. Product marketing or selling
would be inappropriate in this forum.

Demonstrations from prior conferences may be resubmitted with
justification, but new demonstrations are preferred.

Demonstrations should not exceed 30 minutes. Proposals for demonstrations
must include a one-page abstract providing the title and description of the
demonstration, and the names, affiliations, addresses (postal and
electronic), and phone numbers of the demonstrators. In addition, a
description of the technical and hardware requirements for the
demonstration is needed. Demonstrators may be asked to provide their own
equipment or to make arrangements for sharing equipment. For details
contact the Demonstrations Chair. Three copies of the proposal, including
the abstract and technical requirements, must be received by 4 August 1989.

WORKSHOPS

Workshops are a means for expert-level interest groups to meet and discuss
issues with a selected focus--an opportunity for researchers and
practitioners to compare notes. Workshop attendance will be limited, but
submission of position papers prior to the selection of workshop attendees
will be open to all.

To have a workshop listed in the advance program, three copies of a one or
two-page proposal, including the workshop organizer's name, affiliation,
address (postal and electronic), and phone number must be received by 14
April 1989. Proposers will be notified of acceptance by 15 May 1989. Send
submissions to:

EXHIBITS

Running concurrently with the technical program will be an exposition of
hardware and software vendors whose products deal with object-oriented
programming. In addition to the exposition, exhibitors will have the
opportunity to make scheduled presentations as part of the Vendor Forum, an
integral portion of the OOPSLA'89 program. A Press Conference Room will be
available to schedule new product announcements and to showcase customer
case studies. Special emphasis will be placed on press attendance and
coverage. Potential exhibitors should contact the Exhibits Co-Chairs
