[net.auto] Auto Protection

ciampa@wivax.UUCP (Robert Ciampa) (07/27/84)

This letter is in response to a posting in net.audio from a gentleman
who is moving to Boston and stated that he got a Chapman lock to
protect both his car and stereo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as Boston is concerned--the rate of auto theft is high, but
it is declining.
Chapman locks? Please give me a break! They are awful.
I laid out $300 only to have it fail numerous times. One time
resulted in my car having to get towed and I had to pay $50 for the tow
and another $40 to have it (the lock) bypassed. I asked the
Chapman people about a reinstallation and they said 'sorry, we
didn't disconnect it'. I should have called the BBB at that point,
but I declined and left it the way it was. Friends of mine have
also wasted their money on Chapmans...various other problems. As far as
functioning Chapmans, my friend walked out of work (in Boston)
only to find his new Eldorado gone. Unfortunately, Boston thieves
enjoy the lock. Also see Consumer Reports, they had something
about auto anti-theft devices a while back.
