*JOB ON INTEGRATED BIOCONVERSION SYSTEMS IN EASTERN FINLAND*
            ************************************************************

University of Joensuu is located to the cities Joensuu
(some 440 km northeast of Helsinki) and Savonlinna
(some 330 km northeast of Helsinki) in the provinces of
Northern Karelia and Southern Savonia. Karelian Insti-
tute is the research unit of the University, and the
Section of Ecology has nowadays some 40 employees wor-
king on several areas of applied ecology, including pa-
            laeoecology, dendrochronology, fish research, research
on the Lake Saimaa, and water analyses.

The Laboratory of Environmental and Energy Biotechno-
logy (LEEB) is working on integrated bioconversion sys-
tems. The main project includes an integrated system
consisting of a thermophilic composting reactor for
greenhouse heating and a mesophilic biogas reactor for
a heat pump used in the chilling of lettuce grown in
the greenhouse. Other related research projects inc-
lude biogasification of manure slurries from fur fox
farming, use of lactic fermentation for green plant
juice protein recovery, and research on a new compos-
            ting privy designed in Finland.

LEEB is now seeking a research scientist on its main
project for the year 1989. Preferred is a person with
            M. Sc. on microbiology, general microbiology, envi-
ronmental hygiene, biochemical engineering or soil bio-
logy. Practical experience on composting or biometha-
nation is advisable, and experience on lignin biodegra-
dation research will be of advantage. All applications
            will be taken in account.

Please make an application dedicated to Prof. Paavo
Pelkonen, Dean, Faculty of Forestry, with your c. v.
and send it (or requests for more info) to one of the
