[ncr.sys.unix] HP Laserjet + Emulation

gmaranca@ncrarg.BuenosAires.NCR.AR (Gabriel.Maranca@BuenosAires.NCR.AR) (02/27/90)

One of our users has recently bought an NCR 6436-0201 laser printer. This
is the first laser printer we installed at our site - we attached it to a
Tower 32/650, and got it working like a dumb line printer.

We got two manuals with this printer - an Installation Manual and an
Operation Manual. The documentation explains how to set hardware switches
and how to load different emulations from cartridges (which we didn't get),
but doesn't explain how the different emulations work, in particular the
HP Laserjet+ (which is memory-resident). Obviously, one is intended to look
at a Hewlett-Packard manual to know how this emulation can be used.

I have downloaded some Laserjet filters and drivers from uunet, but they
don't seem to work well - maybe the NCR emulation is not perfect, or perhaps
the programs do not port correctly to a Tower 32/650 running Unix 2.01.01.

Does anybody know how could I get some information on the HP Laserjet +
emulation? Is there some NCR publication, or some non-NCR publication
that could be obtained through NCR? If there is any public domain software
available (besides what is on uunet!netlib), could anybody direct me
to the source? I only get the ncr newsgroups here, so I am only aware
of software in the netlib index - if somebody has something other than
what's shown there, I'd appreciate having it posted to one of the
ncr.sources newsgroup - or mail it to me and I'll get it posted if
there is some interest.

I will try to cross-post this to comp.periphs - please do not post answers
there as I don't get this newsgroup on my machine.

Thanks in advance.

You will find that the 6436-0201 printer will work very well with the
650. More information is available from the 6436 Programmers Reference
Manual D2-0192-A. Call if you have additional questions.

I am in the process of converting all our engineering 6436-0101's (never
released externally) to 6436-0201's and our network of towers and PC's
and have spent several weeks with the 6436-0201 Printer Programmers
Manual. (D2-0192-A). The HP emulation is very, very good (even has the
flaws of the real laserjet).

Suggest you order the referenced manual. It is beautifully laid out (pat
on the back for our pubs group), uses lots of white space to separate
different topics/commands onto different pages and includes sections on
the details of programming the printer in all the available emulations.
It IS a COMPLETE replacement for the HP Laserjet Technical Reference
Manual I have been using for years.

I went ahead and posted but am also emailing my response.
