[ba.windows.x] color

Several days ago I posted a message about being unable to display a
color image within an Athena box widget. I got a large number of
helpful hints from the net (thanks everyone!), which I will summarize
when I get this problem solved. At this point, I am using a viewport widget
rather than a box widget, and I have created a Core widget within the
viewport widget to hold the actual image. Judging by the sample code
that other people sent me, I now think my code should be working.

But it isn't! I'm wondering if my Sun3/110 is set up incorrectly to
use color? I know I have color, because I start up xinit with the
-dev /dev/cgfour0 option and I give myself a red cursor to use in
xterm. My DISPLAY environment variable is set to unix:0.0. I read on
page 10 of Volume III of the O'Reilly "X Window System User's Guide"
that "...on the Sun3/110 color workstation, screen 0 is black and
white, and screen 1 is color. By default, windows are always placed
on screen 0, but you can 'scroll' between the two screens with the
mouse, or place a client window on screen 1 by specifying the screen
number in the -display option when starting the client." I tried
using the -display option to change the DISPLAY environment variable
to unix:0.1, but then X Windows won't even start. It also chokes if I
let it start up as unix:0.0 and then try to change it. Is the
O'Reilly book outdated on this point?

Can someone please tell me, is there anything wrong with my color
setup on the Sun, or is there just a bug in my code somewhere that is
preventing the color from showing up in my widget? I'm running Sun
O/S 3.5, and X11R3.

Thanks,
carol
