I have a 1979 MGB that is experiencing problems that nobody seems to be able to solve. The car has a very uneven idle, runs when shut off, misses slightly in the 2000 to 3000 rpm range, and (probably as a result) is getting rather poor fuel economy. The car has only 13K miles and is completely stock (1800cc 4speed w/ single Stromberg model 175 carb.). In an effort to solve these problems, I've done the following: 1) Checked compression (130 lb. across the board with no fluctuation) 2) Replaced the ignition amplifier, distributor cap, plug wires, and plugs (the amplifier was indeed bad, but thats another story) 3) Checked for intake side vacuum leaks, resulting in the replacement of a gulp valve and all gaskets. 4) Overhauled the carb.(setting and resetting the mixture about a billion times) 5) Replaced a charcoal gas vapour canister. 6) Done the unforgivable and taken it to my local British Leyland shop ( "Gee, I've never seen a problem like this before!"). One interesting point is that the run-on seems to be a function of the poor idle, which is intermittent. When the idle is roughest, you can count on it running on as well. I'm presently at a loss as to what to do and am considering shooting the car to put us both out of our miseries. If there is anybody out there who knows the answer to this riddle, please respond quickly, as my gun is at the ready! Kurt D. Del Bene ihnp4!houxm!homxa!delbene
