I downloaded the 1.3 distribution from gatekeeper.dec.com, and the gs.exe file seems to be corrupted -- when I try to run it I get a DOS message about error in the exe file. All the other files seem to be intact, but I haven't check closely. I don't have turbo C so I can't make a new copy myself. Could some one please mail me a copy of gs.exe that is known to work. I really don't want to take time to download the whole thing from scratch. thanks, -- Kevin Allred allred@emx.cc.utexas.edu allred@ut-emx.UUCP

I downloaded the tar file from prep.ai.mit.edu with the same results, so the problem is not local to gatekeeper. -- Terry Hull Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Kansas State University Work: terry@eecea.eece.ksu.edu, rutgers!ksuvax1!eecea!terry Play: terry@tah386.manhattan.ks.us, rutgers!ksuvax1!eecea!tah386!terry

If you think your version of the binary is corrupted, you can get a fresh copy from illian without having to also get the sources. (See previous articles for info on how to get stuff from illian.) Daryl reports that he tried it on two msdos machines, on one it came up, set the screen to white and printed the GS> prompt. On the other machine it hung, and the machine had to be reset. The file make.doc talks about options for building for various machines (286 vs 386, fpu, etc). I suspect that the binary provided in the release is for a 386 machine (which is what Peter uses) and won't run on other machines. If I'm right, someone may wish to build a 'lowest common denominator' binary and make it available. _____ .-----. /_____\ Snoopy ./ RIP \. /_______\ qiclab!sopwith!snoopy | | |___| parsely!sopwith!snoopy | tekecs | |___| sun!nosun!illian!sopwith!snoopy |_________| "I *was* the next man!" -Indy

When I finally got a .exe file it was less than 192000 bytes. I don't have a Unix system that can do anon uucp or tar or compress. I have to get files by ftp, transfer them to my PC by Kermit and then uncompress and untar them there. This has usually worked, but not in this case. There are just to many things to go wrong. It would be best if someone with a working executable would upload it to a system with ftp in its native un-compressed, un-tarred state. MS-DOS binaries don't compress much anyway. On the other hand, I would like to compile it myself, but I use Microsoft C rather than Turbo. I got 1.2 to work somewhat with 1.2, but I'm not going to do it with this. Perhaps the original author could get it to work with MSC 5.1? Doug McDonald
