Due to the imminent untimely demise of one of my cars, I am suddenly in the new car market. I have been throughly satisfied with my 79VW (not the car that died), and would if it were available probably buy another. Unfortunately, I have been told by dealers that there are no more 84 Rabbits with the features I need available, and the new model will not be available until November, so I am looking at alternatives. What is most attractive about the rabbit is the body style (2 door hatch with lots of cargo space for odd shapes), general performance (power, mileage, and handling), and the mechanical durability to go well over 100K miles. I have recently looked at the Omni/Horizon and Mazda-GLC as being reasonably close physically, but have no real feeling for performance or durability. Other cars I have looked at but seem wanting in some way include: Toyota Corolla: No comparable body style, and most come loaded with expensive options. Datsan/Nissan: Comparable models are rare, and hard to get. Honda civic: Visually unappealing, and past models have had questionable durability. Ford Escort, etc: Poor performance, durability unknown. I would be anxious to hear any opinions on the models I have been considering, as well as any other suggestions.
