[gnu.ghostscript.bug] Release of 1.4/problem w/ 1.3 and fonts

In previous messages I notice there was an allusion to ghostscript
1.4: when will it arrive?

I have had it built for a long time and I can use it to view simple
pictures but cannot display text at all. I have 1.3 running on HP-UX
version 6.5. I see from the sources that the X..GC calls are used
to manipulate bitmaps, so the fonts are being read in and
directly manipulated by ghostscript itself. Where in the code are
the font names detected in the PS input stream, and where are they
read in? I thought the problem might be that the uglyfont.* files
need to be in a specific place, possibly even in S-compressed or other
X-determined format.
