hrp@BORING.CRAY.COM (Hal Peterson) (10/31/89)
I have Ghostscript outline descriptions for the following fonts:
Charter-Bold Charter-BoldItalic Charter-Italic Charter-Roman
Courier-Bold Courier-BoldOblique Courier-Oblique Courier
Helvetica-Bold Helvetica-BoldOblique Helvetica-Oblique Helvetica
NewCenturySchlbk-Bold NewCenturySchlbk-BoldItalic
NewCenturySchlbk-Italic NewCenturySchlbk-Roman Symbol Times-Bold
Times-BoldItalic Times-Italic Times-Roman
They are legal; I've converted these for use in Ghostscript from the
bitmaps supplied with the X11 distribution from MIT. My distribution
package will include the AWK script that does the conversion, in case
you have BDF files of your own to convert.
I plan on making the fonts and the conversion software generally
available through FSF channels when the X11R4 distribution is
available later this year, on three conditions: 1) if Cray Research
allows me to release the software to the FSF, which I expect them to
do; 2) if the beta testing between now and the end of the year goes
well; and 3) if anybody cares to have such a thing.
So, if you are interested in beta testing this stuff, let me know by
mail (my newsfeed has been unreliable of late and I don't directly
subscribe to this mailing list). NOTE that I'm a software tester, and
when I say ``beta test'' I don't mean early general release; I expect
beta testers to work hard trying to break and then fix this stuff,
which is not yet suitable for consumption by the general public.

Since two things came in the mail today, I thought I'd send a message about fonts for Ghostscript. Hal Peterson <hrp@boring.cray.com> has made most of the X11R3 fonts work with Ghostscript (more or less, he says). They will either be included in Ghostscript 1.4 or available separately. I am working on producing outline fonts for GhostScript, but I have no prediction as to when we might be able to distribute something. karl@umb.edu
