[net.auto] Help needed for sulphurous smell

marcus@pyuxt.UUCP (M. G. Hand) (08/30/84)

Over the last couple of days I have observed a sweet sulphurous (sic)
smell (a bit like hard boiled eggs) through the air vents when the
engine gets warm. It does not overheat, there is no apparent loss of
performance and everything else appears normal (plenty of oil, coolant,
etc, no smoke, leaks etc). My local service station suggested that the
coolant was low or leaking - nope!

The car is an '83 RX-7 GSL, 25,000 miles, regularly serviced, fuelled
with major brand gas (seven sisters plus Getty).

Has anybody got any suggestions as to:
	1. what is it?
	2.	is it serious?
	3.	what do I do about it?
Thanks in anticipation,

I had the same problem with my Toyota once. It seems the dealer,
during one of the regular service stops, had painted something on
the Catalitic converter. Whenever the CC warmed up, the smell of
rotten eggs began to seep into the car. I could not find out
what it was and the dealer never offered an explanation. I only
found out a few years later when a friend mentioned that he had
the same problem and had found out what it was. I was accusing
everyone in the house of spilling something in the back seat for
6 months. Boy, what a smell. Check out your CC and see if it
was serviced with this gunk. If it was, good luck, the smell
hangs on for quite awhile.

Sulphur Dioxide leaking at the exhaust manifold?

The probable cause of the sulphurous smell is your catalytic convertor,
assuming your car has one. Have the exhaust gas analyzed to insure
proper function of the convertor.
