The UNIX Philosophy Ken Thompson has an automobile which he helped design. Unlike most automobiles, it has neither speedometer, nor gas guage, nor any of the other numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather, if the driver makes a mistake, a GIANT "?" lights up in the center of the dashboard. "The experienced driver," says he, "will usually know what's wrong." Administrative note: -- adh@mvuxi.att.com (Andrew D Hay) reports: [The story of the holes in the wings] is based on the TRUE story of problems with the lockheed constellation; only the punchline is slightly different: lockheed got so desperate for solutions, they asked *everybody* for ideas. a janitor supplied the answer.
