It's not just obscene phone calls that are the trouble. WE've also been troubled by people who get a wrong number and refuse to believe that we're not their friend Wotzit. Or wrote down the wrong numer and keep phoning for Wotzit. Or in one case, got so mad at us for not being Wotzit that the caller phoned back several dozen times and swore at us (not obscenely, just loudly). One way to get by obscene phone calls is to pretend to be your own answering machine. Or put a modem on it. The wy we got rid of the last repeat caller mentioned above was through sheer fluke. A crossed line got an irate mail caller onto our phone "conversation" (?), and he bellowed out, "What the hell is going on here?" I suppose a woman bothered by obscene phone calls could tape a male friend impersonating an irate cop and patch it onto the phone. --Lee Gold
