I don't know how significant the problem is, but I've heard automotive "experts" recommend using single viscosity oil where practical. mark m.

Don't use any single viscosity oil in the GM x-body V6 designs. I've heard that they can be damaged by cold oil ratings of 20 or heavier. It supposedly doesn't provide enough protection for the rod bearings when the engine is cold. I've heard GM now recomends 5w-30 or 10w-40. I personally use 10w-50 when I can get it, 10w-40 when I can't. A straight 10 or 5 weight oil is just too thin. mikey at trsvax

Using the general statement "additives break down" convinces me that the author of this reply is less than authoritative. What in fact happens is there are two kinds of additives: 1 that prevents the molecular bonds from breaking in heat and another which makes the oil more viscous in cold. My source is from a chemical engineer employed by a major oil company.

As a rule I stick with single weight oils and change the viscosity as the season demands...I have had good luck so far(many of my cars run reliably to 200+K miles).
