[u3b.tech] 3b2/310 restore

binde@hardees.rutgers.edu (Beth Binde) (03/08/90)

A 3b2/310 on campus was badly scrambled by a power hit. In an attempt
to restore it, a partial restore of the Essential Utilities (as recommended
in the manual) was done. This removed the cartridge tape and ni devices
from the edt. Not to worry, the cartridge tape utilities were re-installed
and TCP/IP was reinstalled. Unfortunately, TCP/IP was not de-installed
first. The system will not go into multi-user mode, and attempts to invoke
magic mode have failed. (If we could only get into single-user mode, we
could fix all this.)

Another attempt was made at a partial restore. The system advises us that it
cannot do so because there are only 272 blocks on the disk, and 800 are
needed. (This was attempted after booting from the Essential Utilities Disk 1.)

An attempt was made to boot from /etc/system. The error message was

External Symbol linkTable is undefined; set to zero
External symbol sxtopen is undefined; set to zero
ERROR: linkTable

When booting from /unix, the system does not make it in to multi-user mode--
it repeats the message socket:no such device or address and hangs.

The system is quite messed up at the moment. The manual has been consulted
but offers no illumination. We'd like to avoid a full restore if at
all possible.

Any pointers?
