I am trying to use DDE to do interprocess communications across a local area network. We have purchased DDEX from: NetLogic Inc. 201 East 12th. Street Suite 409 New York, NY 10003 and we were using this software on our local area network (Novell NETWARE) without any problems while we were running Windows/286 on our 286 machines. Recently we purchased several 386 machines. When we attempt to run DDEX using Windows 386 on our 386 machines we end up hanging the machines. Everything works fine on our 386 machines when we use Windows/286. Problems only occur when we use Windows/386. At first I thought that the problem was with DDEX. In order to try some other networking software under Windows/386 I contacted: Da Vinci Systems Corp. Raleigh, N.C. They told me that the problem was in Windows/386. If I understood them correctly they said that it had to do with a conflict of Port I/O addresses between the network hardware (3Com boards) and Windows 386. Another problem I am having is that I can run Windows/386 on one of our 386s with NFS and NETWARE software loaded (NETWARE is using a 3C505 and NFS is using a 3C503) along with Novell's NetBIOS emulator. With all of these drivers loaded there is under 400K of RAM available for Windows/386 but it works. On another of our 386 machines, Windows 386 will not run unless there is at least 590K of memory available. If there is less than 590K of memory available then I get the following error: Error: Not enough memory to initialize Windows. The 2 machines I am using are configured as follows: Machine 1 - Windows/386 runs with less than 400K of RAM. Compaq Deskpro 386/20 3Com 3C505 (Etherlink Plus) - I/O 300 - DMA 5 - IRQ 2 (9 on the board) 3Com 3C503 (Etherlink II) - I/O 310 - INT 5 Compaq Hi-Res monitor (CGA compatible but mono display) Machine 2 - Windows/386 will not run unless at least 590K of RAM is free. Compaq Deskpro 386/25 3Com 3C503 (Etherlink II) - I/O 300 - INT 5 QUAD EGA + board driving a NEC Multisync II. Both of these machines have 1MB of RAM and Compaq standard hard disks and one 1.2 MB floppy. Any ideas about why Windows/386 runs on one machine with less memory than on the other (the difference in the monitor drivers is only about 30K)? Any ideas as to why networking (of the Novell NETWARE flavor) and Windows/386 do not work together? Any information would be helpful at this point.
