[comp.windows.ms] Questions from a neo

allbery@ncoast.ORG (Brandon S. Allbery) (02/21/89)

I recently installed Windows/286 2.1 on my ITT XTRA for a project at work.
Needless to say, I even more recently installed an Inboard-386 to make
Windows usable. ;-) Anyway, this situation is temporary, due to the license
on the Windows distribution and the fact that the "2nd user" will soon be
wanted at work; being a basicmyally honorable type, I will destroy this copy
of Windows and all backups when the time comes. (Side note: I have annoyed
a former boss a few times by being honorable in this way. Too bad.)

Anyway, I've this machine, and (temporarily) Windows. Being a Mac type
normally, I find Windows rather preferable to raw MiS-DOS, so I'm
considering my options. With an Inboard-386 without 387 or added memory,
Windows/286 runs (sort of; 256K of extended memory does not make for lots of
swap space); my understanding is that Windows/386 will not run at all in
such a configuration, as it needs more extended memory.

I'd like some suggestions as to what I should consider doing when I have to
wipe the office copy. As I'd like to save some money for little things like
the car insurance payment [ ;-) ], I'd prefer not to have to spend lots of
$$$. Any suggestions are appreciated; by mail, please. I will summarize if
there's sufficient interest; I can't be the only Inboard user on the Usenet.

Oh, and one other question. Rather than try to figure out what I was
getting in to, I configured that 256K as extended memory. Is there any
particular danger in running Windows/286 with iLIM386 (expanded memory
emulator which apparently runs the 386 in virtual 8086 mode)? Would the
result be slower? Faster? (Using it as extended memory does leave more
conventional and extended memory available, I notice; iLIM386 seems to be
something of a pig.)

And should I byte the bullet [ ;-) ] and buy another meg of memory for this
beast? (Frankly, I'd like to reserve memory purchases for the Mac....)

Thanks in advance,
++Brandon
