[comp.windows.ms] Windows output.prn on AppleTalk

msummers@umn-d-ub.D.UMN.EDU (Mark Summers) (04/08/89)

Is it possible to use AppleTalk network directly from windows.

We currently use an AT with an Apple LocalTalk PC Card running
AppleShare PC to send PostScript readable files, like output.prn from
Windows, to a LaserWriter IINT. It would seem likely that we could set
Windows to send the output.prn directly. If that is possible, then is it
possible to send the PostScript output from any program running in
Windows directly across AppleTalk to PostScript lasers.

I find very little info about Windows on networks and hope someone can
direct me.

Thanks in advance.

Well...I do this all the time, but not with your exact setup tho.

I have a PS/2-80 with an AppleTalk board from Daystar digital. I send
files to "LPT3.PRN" which are then automatically sent to the LaserWriter by
the Daystar software, since LPT3 is my "network" printer.

So, I suspect it's a software difference, if this will not work for
you.

Aldus has a Postscript driver that can print directly to Appletalk. I got
it with Pagemaker ... they may sell it stand alone. The other solution is
to install Appleshare. This allows you to print to a virtual LPT but is
a memory hog (~=80K).
