[net.auto] Patchwork on a Honda

jenny@petfe.UUCP (Jenny Sautter) (10/01/84)

My 1978 Honda, although in fairly good condition mechanically,
is slowly rusting (mainly the back two fenders). I finally
got the bright idea to patch these holes (now rotting through
to the frame). However, I need some help from all you net.auto
users. Has anyone out there patched a car before? I have
already "stopped" the rust by spraying it with some type of
"stoprust" chemical which, in turn, turned the rust spots black.
Any advice or experiences with patching a car would be appreciated.

	Thanks in advance.

First off--- How bad is the rust on your Honda?

Is just the sheet metal rotted out or is the frame rotted out?
It makes a big difference.

And how old is the car? How much longer do you attend to keep it?
The answer to these questions will decide which way is the best
way to fix you car.

Sand the rust down to the metal. Use a fiberglass/resin
kit to patch the hole. Use rubber gloves and acetone cleans
the brush. Then sand the hardened glass. Use bondo or spot
putty to fill in any irregularities. Use wet sanding from
medium to fine. Prime, wet sand with fine again, paint,
and if you're using lacquer buff out. If you're using
enamel you shouldn't have to buff.
