[net.auto] Superchargers vs. Turbochargers

hal@aesat.UUCP (Hal Patnaik) (10/07/84)

Thanx for all the replies I got answering my question. Now, here's
another one:

I seem to remember awhile back some discussion about some movie named
"Mad Max" and how there was some way of switching on and off the
supercharger in one of the cars. The next few days we were deluged
with people flaming one another saying that it could not be done, etc.

Now, the idea that I have has its faults, but seems fairly simple:
(assuming that my information on superchargers is correct.)

If superchargers are anything like turbo's in the fact that they have some
kind of a wastegate, why not make it an electronic wastegate and
have a switch in the car which would force it open, and bring pressure
back down to 0. This would not totally remove the supercharger, and it
would drag some power off the car, but I dont think that it would
be much worse than the compressor for your air conditioner.

How does that sound?
