FOR RELEASE JULY 17, 1989
hDC Windows Manager
Expands Windows With Pop-up Utilities
Redmond, Wash. -- hDC Computer Corporation today shipped
hDC Windows Manager, the desktop utility manager that brings the
convenience of pop-up utilities to Microsoft Windows. With special
Microsoft Windows desktop utilities called MicroApps, Windows
Manager lets users efficiently expand and customize their Microsoft
Windows systems.
"Windows Manager lets you get more out of Windows because
you have instant access to the MicroApps from anywhere within
Windows without leaving your current program," said Dan Elenbaas,
president. "And Windows Manager is extremely flexible -- you can
install it as a pull-down menu for quick access from the menu bar
of any window, or install it as a tear-off menu and place it
anywhere on the screen."
With Windows Manager users can customize and manage their Windows
system by installing, configuring and removing MicroApps. Windows
Manager comes with seven MicroApps that enhance the Windows system:
o Alarm Clock displays the date and time, and
reminds users of up to three appointments.
o Auto Save automatically saves users' work
in any Windows program at pre-set intervals
to help avoid accidental losses.
o Desktop provides three ways for users to
customize their Windows desktop. "Startup"
lets users start Windows using a custom
startup screen with a choice of eight special
effects, such as fade or zoom. For example,
users can take a graphic of the corporation's
logo, choose their preferred color, and select
the zoom special effect which animates the
graphic on the screen. "Background" lets users
customize the background pattern of Windows
screens with a pattern or graphic from a paint
or drawing program. "Screen Saver" prevents
screen burn-in with a choice of graphic effects.
These effects take over the screen when the
keyboard or mouse haven't been used for a
pre-set period of time.
o Font Viewer displays samples of available screen
and printer fonts so users can review how type
styles and sizes will look before printing a
document.
o Memory Viewer provides a graphic display of how
the user's system memory is being utilized -- both
conventional and expanded memory -- in pie or bar
chart form.
o System Enhancer includes four commands that enhance
the operation of Windows. "Run" lets users run an
application from within any Windows program. It
also allows users to open several programs in one
step. "Arrange" organizes all open windows by
overlapping, tiling or minimizing them. "Close All
Windows" quickly closes all open Windows applications.
"End Session" lets users exit Windows from any application.
o Work Sets provides two functions that add efficiency
to Windows. Users can create their own Work Sets by
positioning and sizing programs and files that are
used together, then launch them all with a single
command. For example, selecting the "Corporate
Newsletter" Work Set command could open a PageMaker
newsletter document, a Write file of newsletter text,
and Micrografx Draw, in the positions previously
determined by the user. Work Sets also lets users
save the current state of any Windows session, so they
can quickly pick up right where they left off when they
exited Windows.
Additional MicroApps can easily be added to Windows Manager as they
become available. Windows Manager requires an IBM PC/XT/AT, IBM PS/2,
or Microsoft compatible personal computer, and Microsoft Windows/286
or Microsoft Windows/386 version 2.0 or higher. A Microsoft Mouse or
compatible is optional. hDC Windows Manager is offered at an
introductory retail price of $79.95. For more information, call hDC
