[comp.windows.ms] Can MS-Windows benefit from upgrading my AT from 512K to 1M?

mark@motcsd.UUCP (Mark Jeghers) (10/04/89)

I have MS-Windows running on an AT clone with 512K of memory. I plan to
upgrade the memory to at least 640K. But I am also considering just
going to 1024K (1M) and using the extra memory for other purposes (e.g.
ramdisk, cache, etc.).

From reading the Windows manuals, it is unclear whether or not I can
utilize this "above-640" block of memory with SMARTDrive. I am not sure
if this memory is considered to be "expanded" or "extended" or neither.
Nor am I sure what other ramdisk offerings are available that will use
this memory.

Can someone please explain to me the implementations of having ram in
the adress space between 640K and 1024K? Are there not other things
like video, etc, mapped into this address space? Please enlighten me!

Thanks in advance for pointers/tips/etc.

Windows will most definately benefit from as much ram as you can give it.
(It's a memory pig.) Also try not to run any TSRs when running windows.

Unless things have changed markedly from when I was programming in
windows, windows wants expanded memory LIM 4.0.
