[comp.windows.ms] Can MS-Windows benefit fr

Mark - adding the extra 512K will be a definite asset. The first part of
it will go to filling your conventional memory up to 640K. The remaining
384K will appear as extended memory on your AT clone (unless there's
something wierd about it!). This is great news.

Yes, MS Windows will benefit ... because first, you can use the
HIMEM.SYS driver. This lets MSW install about 60K + or - of it's own
code into the extended memory, leaving that space free in conventional
memory for your WinApps to use. This means less disk swapping as you
move about different areas of your WinApps. The balance of the extended
should probably just be devoted to SMARTDRV.SYS (the Windows disk cache)
to wring some additional performance out of disk intensive apps.

The RAM you add will _not_ be placed in the address space between 640K
and 1024K. This space is reserved for video memory, hard disk controller
ROM's, net cards, etc. Having (just) one meg isn't enough to really
derive any benefit from using a RAMDrive with Windows. With 2 megs, now
we're talking!

Also, with SmartDrive, remember to set BUFFERS=20 in your CONFIG.SYS,
don't bother with any higher number, it won't help you and it consumes
conventional memory.
