[comp.windows.ms] Windows 386 and 123R3

I tried to mail this, but it bounced so here goes:

Regarding running 123 release 3 under Windows/386:

I am pretty sure that you cannot do this at this time. The reason
is that Windows/386 runs the '386 in Virtual 8086 mode (a special
case of protected mode). 123R3 also runs in protected mode (though
not V86 mode) using the Rational Systems DOS extender. The
DOS extender is able to run on a '386 system in V86 mode if the
'386 system is supporting VCPI (a Phar Lap/Quarterdeck standard).
But at this time Windows 386 does not provide support for VCPI.

As a result you can run 123R3 with DesqView (I think) and it may
work with Windows/286 (ie not Windows 386). But right now it
cannot work with Windows '386. At the Lotus Developers Conference
in June there were hints that the new release of Windows may
support VCPI (and thus work with 123R3) but you have to remember the
rivalry between 123 and Excel.
