[comp.windows.ms] maths coprocessor and windows

justin@griffin.itc.gu.oz (MMAX) (12/06/89)

Does anyone know of any incompatibilities with windows 386 running on a
386-20Mhz and an Intel 387-20 math coprocessor. Windows run fine untill I
installed th copro and then windows title screen was displayed and then the
system dropped back to the DOS prompt. Windows did manage to load up
correctly once and once only. The version is 2.1 Windows 386.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You need windows/386 dated after September 1988. There are odd inter-
actions between the 386 and 387 which cause crashes in software that
does paging, link windows/386. For the 16Mhz 386's there was a special
chip called an Ironwood that could be installed under the 387 to fix
this problem. Microsoft fixed it them selves with Revsion D of 2.1.
