Does anyone know if Version 2.0 of Actor is actually shipping yet, or are the ads premature (as usual)? Also, what new features does it have, if any?

Actor 2.0 is shipping. I received my copy earlier this week. I have not done anything more than install it and make sure that the demos at least run. From the Intro section of the Addendum Manual and some sale sheets the new features include: - swapping static objects to disk so that programs can run in 640K of memory without needed extended or expanded memory additions - simplified "sealing-off" process - enhancements to the browser - better support for C structures - user defined primitives in C or assembler Jim Vallino Siemens Corporate Research, Inc., Princeton, NJ jrv@demon.siemens.com princeton!siemens!demon!jrv (609) 734-3331

Damn, I just bought Actor 1.2. Is there an upgrade policy (like free if you bought it in the last month) or an I hosed? Also, will it work under 3.0, or do I have to try it myself. Not to imply that an unannounce windows 3.0 exists or anything. -gyug gyugyi@hotstuff.stanford.edu

We started shipping Actor 2.0 on the 31st (pretty much). So it has hit the streets. As for what the features are, there are plenty of new ones and enhancements to previous features. The new features are: -A static memory swapping system that basically gives the programmer 1 Meg of memory in which to store static objects (this includes code). -Printer support (included with this are routines that will take a "screenshot" and dump it to the printer. -Bitmap clipboard support -User defined primitives -Dynamic dialog box creation -Dynamic menu creation -A whole lot of little things Basically, those are the major additions to the product. We've also improved the CStructures, edit controls, added search and replace features to edit windows, and made other improvements to existing classes. It's a cool system. -- "Organized fandom is composed of a bunch of nitpickers with a thing for trivial pursuit." -Harlan Ellison

If you bought it from a dealer we have to have gotten a registration card from you or else we won't even know that you've bought Actor. If you bought it directly from us then you should get the upgrade in the near future. As for 3.0, all I can say is give it a try. It might work. @:) -- "Organized fandom is composed of a bunch of nitpickers with a thing for trivial pursuit." -Harlan Ellison

I just interviewed (first level) with MicroSoft, and we discussed some of the problems people are having with Windows. The only response I got, however, was "Just wait for Win3." It keeps me on the edge of my seat. The funiest, though, is when you ask a developer if their product will run under Win3. The stock answer is "our product will work with any future release of Windows." Not even a mention of a version number when both the inquisitor and the respondant know that the respondant has a copy of the supposedly non-existent program in hand.
